The No. 6 Riverside City College women's water polo team put up two strong performances against San Diego Mesa College Spartans and Citrus College Owls at the Citrus Mini Tournament on Thursday. The Tigers blew San Diego Mesa out of the Water and followed with a close two-score victory over Citrus.
GAME ONE
Sophomore Amber Nielsen was as explosive as she has been all year by netting a season-high six goals in a 16-5 victory over the Owls. So far this season, she has scored in every game but one and has recorded three or more goals in seven games. She added a drawn ejection and a steal in the process.
Sophomore Lauren Nelson hummed home three scores while adding two assists and two steals. Three players scored two goals featuring sophomore Taylor Mason and freshman duo Stephenie Plumb. Mason and Plum pocketed three steals each, while Mason dished out two assists.
Sophomore Gabriella Fisher earned her eighth win after playing two quarters and tallying a pair of saves and one assist. Freshman Daniela Guzman earned two saves in two quarters of action.
GAME TWO
The second game against the host Owls was a nail biter.
Neither team scored in the opening quarter, but the Tigers took a late advantage reading 4-1 with two goals from Nielsen and an opening quarter score from Mason. The Tigers extended their lead to four leading up the final eight minutes with Mason kicking off the scoring, backed by a netter from sophomore Lindsay Habegger and Plumb.
The Tigers were outscored in the fourth 3-1, but were able to hang on by a thread leading to an 8-6 win.
Mason finished with three goals, while Nielsen recorded two scores and one assist. Plumb was responsible for two score marking her first time with consecutive two-score contests.
Fisher went the distance and recorded two saves.
