Starting the season on a high note is always the goal for any program. For the Riverside City College women's water polo squad, a 7-0 start is just what the doctor ordered. The Tigers are coming off a sweep in their annual Riverside City College Tournament that featured solid wins against tough competitors in Allan Hancock, Ventura, Cerritos, and Santa Barbara.
The highlight matchup featured the undefeated Tigers against the undefeated Santa Barbara City College Vaqueros in the final contest of the tournament.
The game was tight from the beginning as neither team scored entering into the second stanza.
Riverside struck first in the second quarter after sophomore driver Anay Ramirez (Riverside, CA) fired home a netter to hand the Tigers a slim lead. However, SBCC roared back and fired home three-consecutive goals and faced the Tigers with a 3-1 deficit.
SBCC's two-goal advantage was quickly washed away by the Tigers as they outscored the Vaqueros, 4-0, in the third frame. Freshman center Kate Fox (Murrieta, CA) got the Tigers started with a netter to bring Riverside within one score of a tie. Sophomore attacker Josceline Godinez (Menifee, CA) followed a minute later with a score to tie up the game. Freshman attacker Nikkol Webber (Riverside, CA) backed her with a score to hand them the lead, followed by another goal from Godinez en route to a 5-3 lead.
Godinez's second goal of the game turned out to be the game-winner as the Vaqueros only scored one goal in the fourth en route to a 5-4 Tiger's win.
Freshman goalkeeper Hannah McCarley (Riverside, CA) was money between the posts by recording 10 saves. She assisted in blanking the Vaqueros in the first and third quarter as well.
In the second game of the tournament, the Tigers handled Cerritos with ease by the final score of 13-6. Riverside outscored the Falcons in each of the first three quarters. In the final quarter, they only allowed Cerritos to find the net once.
Freshman attacker Katy Peterson (Menifee, CA) was the offensive aggressor by leading her squad in goals with four. Three of her goals came in the opening eight minutes to provide a solid cushion. Godinez joined in on the scoring action in the second quarter with two netters with her second goal leading into halftime with a 10-2 advantage.
Riverside cruised through the remaining minutes by outscoring the Falcons 3-1 en route to the victory.
The Tigers utilized the solid momentum they gained from Friday's victories and carried it into Saturday competition, starting with a victory over Ventura College.
The Tigers reached the double-digit scoring plateau for the fourth consecutive game and hauled in a 14-6 victory.
It was all Riverside in the opening two quarters as the Tigers jumped out to an early 8-1 advantage. In that span, five different Tigers scored a goal. Peterson lead the charge once again with two goals and freshman attacker Caelan Loroff (Calgary, AB) netted a pair of goals as well.
Riverside continued to dominate the remainder of the game. Ramirez scored two-consecutive goals in the third quarter to put the Tigers up nine en route to the victory.
The Tigers (7-0, 1-0 OEC) look to make it an even eight-in-a-row by taking on the Saddleback College Gauchos (4-3, 0-1 OEC) on the road this Wednesday, September 27th at 4 p.m.
