
Tigers Avenge Lone Loss, Win Pair at Battle of the Beach Tournament; Host Golden West in Wednesday's Regular Season Finale
LONG BEACH -- Avenging its lone loss of the season to date, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's water polo squad won both of its games in the second and final day of competition at the Long Beach City College (LBCC)-hosted Battle at the Beach Tournament Saturday (Oct. 22).
Riverside City (24-1 overall) opened with a 12-3 win over the Golden West College (GWC) Rustlers. The Tigers led, 2-1, at the end of the first quarter, 5-2 at halftime and 8-2 heading into the fourth quarter.
Eight different Tigers scored, led by sophomore two-meter offense player Emily Martin (Yucaipa / Yucaipa HS '15) -- who is pictured -- with three goals. Sophomore attacker Jacqueline Godinez (Menifee / Vista Murrieta HS '15) added two goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Ariana Olmos (Redlands / Redlands East Valley HS '15) had ten saves.
In the nightcap and tournament finale, The Tigers avenged an earlier loss to the top-ranked Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) with a 10-7 double-overtime win over the Vaqueros. Three weeks ago (Oct. 1), SBCC topped Riverside, 14-12, in the Rabobank Tournament at Cuesta College, snapping the Tigers' then-15-game win streak. Since that loss, Riverside has won nine in a row.
Against SBCC (22-1 overall), Riverside led, 3-2, at the end of the first quarter, 4-2 at halftime, and 5-4 at the end of third quarter before a late surge by the Vaqueros tied the game at 7-7, sending the game into overtime. The Tigers scored twice in the first overtime and once in the second overtime to win the game, 10-7.
Martin had four goals while sophomore attacker Mary Myers (Riverside / M.L. King HS '15) had three goals, three assists and ten steals. Olmos had six saves in the cage.
Riverside will play its final regular season game, an Orange Empire Conference (OEC) battle on Wednesday, Oct. 26, when it hosts Golden West (19-3 overall, 5-0 OEC)at 3 p.m. RCC also is 5-0 in OEC action.
