Tigers Top Orange Coast and Santa Barbara at Cuesta Tournament; Improve to 11-1
SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Posting a pair of victories to open action at the Cuesta College Tournament, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's water polo squad stretched its current win streak to seven.
Riverside (11-1 overall) drubbed Orange Empire Conference (OEC) rival Orange Coast College, 15-6, in a morning game. Later, with only two hours of rest, RCC broke open a 3-3 game against the Santa Barbara City College Vaqueros with nine unanswered goals and won, 12-3.
In the opener against the OCC Pirates, the Tigers led, 5-2, after the first quarter, 8-3 at halftime, and 11-6 after three periods.
Against OCC, RCC frosh attacker Mary Myers (Riverside / Martin Luther King, Jr. HS '15) led RCC with three goals, two assists and seven steals, frosh attacker Citlali Salazar (Eastvale / Eleanor Roosevelt HS '15) had three goals and one assist, and frosh two-meter offensive player Emily Martin (Yucaipa / Yucaipa HS '15) also had three goals. Sophomore two-meter defensive player Jaclyn Myers (Riverside / Martin Luther King, Jr. HS '13) had four assists and two steals.
In the nightcap against SBCC, the Tigers scored three times in the second quarter, twice in the third, and four times in the fourth for the 12-3 final.
Against SBCC, Salazar had four goals, three assists and four steals, Mary Myers had three goals, two assists and four steals, Martin had three goals and one assist, and sophomore attackers Kelley Geurts (Murrieta / Murrieta Valley HS '14) had four assists.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Chang (Laie, HI / Kahuku (Oahu) HS '14) recorded 14 saves against OCC and seven saves against SBCC.
Riverside will next compete in the Cuesta Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 3. The Tigers will first play against OEC rival Golden West College (GWC) at 8:45 a.m. before playing another OEC rival, the Fullerton College Hornets at 3:40 p.m..
Due to the suspension of the Santa Ana College Dons men's and women's water polo programs, RCC's first home game will be on Wednesday, Oct. 14, when it greets those same OCC Pirates in an OEC game at 3 p.m.
