Tigers Open Season in Dominating Fashion
Riverside City College got the 2025 season underway Friday afternoon, opening with a big 17-4 victory over Cuesta College.
The Tigers start the year 1-0, while the Cougars open the year at 0-1.
Jorge Rodriguez picked up the win on the mound for RCC, tossing five strikeouts and allowing just one run.
After Cuesta scored first in the top of the third, Riverside responded with four runs of its own in the bottom half of the frame. Dylan Nelson (3-for-4) led the inning off with a big triple to left field, before coming home for the tying run off a Bubba Heidler (2-for-4) bunt. A Cougar error tacked on another run for RCC before back-to-back RBI grounders from Ian Nguyen (1-for-3) and Alex Gamez (1-for-4) put Riverside up 4-1 before Cuesta could get out of the inning.
The Tigers all but put the game out of reach with seven runs in the sixth and four runs in the eighth to seal the 17-4 victory.
Nelson got things going in the sixth after knocking an RBI single to left field. Heidler followed with a base hit to right that scored Nelson, 8-1. Despite a pitching change, RCC kept rocking and scored on a bases-loaded walk before Luke Medure (1-for-4) drove in two runners and Marc DiCarlo Jr. (2-for-2) batted in another two off a triple to center, 13-1.
Cuesta managed to break through with three runs in the eighth, but once again RCC took advantage of its opportunity at home and sealed the 17-4 victory with four runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Due to forecasted rain on Sunday, Riverside and Cuesta will close out the three-game series on Saturday with a pair of games. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
