Riverside Battles Ranked Foe in Season Opener
Riverside City College opened the new season with a battle, coming up just short in a 6-5 loss to No. 11-ranked Cerritos College.
The Tigers start the season 0-1, while the Falcons improve to 2-0 on the year.
RCC outhit Cerritos 11-to-6, with three Tigers posting two hits: Jocelyn Romero (2-for-4), Jocelyn Uglesich (2-for-3), and Isabella Ramirez (2-for-3).
The Tigers struck first after loading the bases in the bottom of the second and Romero drew a rogue pitch to send Grace Rogers in from third.
Cerritos took the lead with two runs in the fifth, but RCC grabbed it back in the sixth with three runs. With two outs and runners on first and second, Romero blasted a triple to right field to score both before coming home on a Uglesich base hit, 4-2.
The Falcons made things interesting with four runs in the seventh to jump in front 6-4.
In the bottom half of the inning with two outs and a runner on, Yasmin Brezic stepped in to pinch hit and doubled down the left-field line to put the Tigers within one.
Cerritos wouldn't let RCC get any closer, however, and grabbed the next out to secure the win.
Riverside turns right around to host San Diego City on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
