Tigers Run Away With First Win of the Year
Riverside City College picked up its first win of the year with an exclamation point, grabbing a 9-1, run-rule victory over Pasadena City College Tuesday afternoon.
The Tigers improve to 1-6 on the year, while the Lancers drop to 0-4.
Three Tigers had multiple hits in the game, with Angelina Sanchez and Grace Rogers each going 3-for-4 at the plate. Isabella Ramirez finished 2-for-4, while Jessica Gaitan, Yasmine Brezic, Abigail Baldwin and Ruby McDonald also had hits for RCC.
PCC struck first in the top of the second, but Riverside responded with four runs in the bottom half of the frame. Rogers led off with a base hit to center before coming home on a Ramirez double to tie the game.
The Tigers then loaded the bases with two outs, allowing Sanchez to drive in two runners with a hard knock to center field. Sanchez then came home on a wild pitch before the Lancers could get out of the inning.
Riverside tacked on two runs in the fifth before putting the mercy rule into action in the bottom of the sixth. McDonald opened the inning with a triple to right and came home as PCC grabbed the first out of the inning.
Sanchez stepped up to the plate and singled through the left side before making her way to third on a fielding error by the Lancers' left fielder. Gaitan gave her the green light to come home and scored the game-ending run off a Ramirez RBI single.
Gaitan picked up the win in the circle, throwing nine strikeouts and allowing just two hits.
Riverside was scheduled to host Moorpark College on Thursday for a pair of games, but the doubleheader was rescheduled due to the impending rainstorm. Friday's game at Southwestern College will be determined later this week.
