Clutch Play Pushes Tigers Past IVC

The Riverside City College women's tennis team faced off against the Irvine Valley College Lasers in a premier Orange Empire Conference (OEC) showdown Tuesday afternoon. After sweeping the doubles play, the Tigers relied on their lower-ranked singles players to seal a 5-3 victory.

The match began with singles play and the four through six was responsible for setting the tone. Freshman Hannah Stevenson acted as the number four singles player and worked her way to a commanding 6-1, 6-0 victory. Freshman Miranda Cardenas earned a hard-fought 7-4, 6-4 win, while freshman Monica Madrid earned a 6-0, 6-3 victory in the sixth position.

The top doubles team consisting of freshman duo Torrey Mateljan and Maxelle Bernie was unable to finish their match due to weather. They were postponed after leading 4-3. Number two duo sophomore Heather Graf and freshman Yasmin Johnson finsihed with an 8-5 win, while  Stevenson and sophomore Emilia Lopez backed both teams at the third position with an 8-4 win.

Riverside (7-1, 2-1 OEC) will continue action on Thursday, March 7 on the road against the Fullerton College Hornets.
