Women’s Volleyball Snags Second Win in Three Matches, Defeats Santiago Canyon
The Riverside City College women's volleyball team hosted the one-win Santiago Canyon College Hawks in Orange Empire Conference (OEC) on Friday night in Wheelock Gymnasium. The Tigers worked to a three-set sweep after pocketing a first set victory and promtply setting their cruise control to a win with set scores reading 25-10, 25-20, 25-20.
The Tigers earned their second win in three matches after defeating Fullerton last Friday in straight sets. Sophomore Maggie Aburto was the anchor to the offense as she hammered home a game-high 17 kills. It is the 13th time this season she has surpassed the 10-kill mark and has recorded double-digit kills in six of the last eight games.
Running the offense from the setter position was the reliable freshman Audry Elias. She lofted up 31 assists while chipping in nine digs, two aces and a block. It is the eighth time this season she has recorded 30 or more assists. Furthermore, Elias has recorded 25 or more assist in each win.
Freshman Paris Toaetolu had a strong game as seen in six kills on 18 swings while defending the net for three blocks. Sophomore Jessica Lepe led the team with 10 digs and pocketed one ace. She added four kills as well.
Sophomore Kayla Brown saw playing time in all three sets and recorded a kill and a block, while freshman Lanah Bergen chipped in four kills in two sets.
