Nejera, Manning Tally Double-Doubles in Second Straight Victory
The Tigers wrapped up the Inaugural Title IX Tip Off on Saturday night by squaring off against the East Los Angeles College Huskies. Riverside's starting five did the bulk of the damage with three of the five landing in double digits leading to a 67-56 lead.
It was not all roses from the tip as a low-scoring first quarter set the tone for a close match up. The Tigers trailed after the first, but took control of the game behind a strong showing in the second and third quarters. The Huskies displayed some fight in the fourth as they brought the score to within five points, but a Riverside 10-3 run with a minute left in the fourth quarter iced East LA.
Riverside outplayed the Huskies in every category aside from turnovers. Despite RCC coughing the rock up 12 more times than ELAC, the Tigers shot 39 percent from the floor highlighted by a 42.9 shooting percentage from long range. Furthermore, they dominated the boards, 50-34, and bucketed 28 points in the paint.
Leading the charge was sophomore Neveah Manning. Despite a slow start, she finished with a game-high 18 points and corralled 11 rebounds to tally her first double-double of the season. Joining her on the double-double front was sophomore Maxine Nejera who flushed a career-high 16 points and hauled in a game-high 13 boards; seven on the offensive end.
Freshman Makayla Roberts finished with a career-high 14 points after working her way to the line 12 times. She flushed nine of her shots at the charity stripe.
Sophomore Neiya Hamilton led her team in assists with seven, while Manning and Roberts combined for six assists. Hamilton added three rebounds and six points as well.
