Ruiz Claims 3C2A State 10K Championship

In the first scored event of the 3C2A State Championship, Riverside City College's Ernesto Ruiz won the 10K to kick off the championship with a bang.

Ruiz clocked in at 30 minutes, 23.00 seconds after leaving his competition in the dust in the final leg of the race. He beat out his runner-up by almost 12 seconds to give RCC an early 10 points in the team standings, sitting just one point behind Mt. San Antonio College after the first day.

Nicandro Rosas also competed in the State Championship and finished the 10K in 32:40.13.

Samuel Willis sits in second place in the decathlon after completing the first five events with 3,473 points. He took second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.03 seconds – just .01 seconds off first place – and second in the shot put with a throw of 12.42 meters. Willis also finished fourth in the long jump with a mark of 6.48 meters, sixth in the high jump at 1.76 meters and seventh in the 400-meter race.

The Tigers continue the State Championship on Saturday at Saddleback College, with the first event starting at 10 a.m.
