RIVERSIDE – Giving their opponents everything they had, but coming up a little short, the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers lost, 3-1, against the visiting Golden West College (GWC) Rustlers in an Orange Empire Conference (OEC) match Wednesday evening (Oct. 23) at legendary Arthur N. Wheelock Gymnasium.
Golden West (12-0, 6-0 OEC) – the No. 3 team in the state and one of three undefeated teams – won by the set scores of 22-25, 25-18, 29-27, 25-11. GWC leads in the all-time series, 48-3, and has won the last five meetings between the two teams after RCC had won three of the previous confrontations.
Riverside hit well throughout the match (.242) and kept the ball in play along the back row to deny the Rustlers numerous points on unforced errors.
The Rustlers were led by freshman outside hitter Jordyn Sanchez (Huntington Beach / Huntington Beach HS), who had a match-high 23 kills and 16 digs, and freshman outside hitter Tyler Davis (Huntington Beach / Edison HS), who was next with 19 kills. Freshman setter Taylor Packer (Huntington Beach / Huntington Beach HS) had 35 assists. Freshman setter Janessa Brown (Garden Grove / Rancho Alamitos HS) tallied 19 assists in the third set. Freshman libero Kelynn Mullally (Huntington Beach / Huntington Beach HS) registered 15 digs.
For Riverside (5-9, 1-5 OEC), the Tigers were led by sophomore outside hitter Deborah Catanese (Corona / Christian Heritage HS) with a team-high 17 kills. Sophomore setter Jennifer Norton (Highland / Redlands East Valley HS) led with a team-high 27 assists. Freshman defensive specialist Sara Kelly (Riverside / John W. North HS) and Norton each had a team-high eight digs as no less than six Tigers had at least five digs.
In the first set, RCC put a bit of a shock into GWC as it built leads of 7-3, 10-7, 15-9, 18-10, and 21-10, en route to the 25-22 win.
In the second set, the Rustlers finally snapped out of their funk and won, 25-18.
The third set featured six ties. RCC led, 24-20, but GWC rallied for a 24-24 ties. There were ties at 25, 26, and 27, before GWC pulled out a 29-27 win. Golden West hit .341, while RCC hit .342.
The fourth set saw the Rustlers lead from start to finish and cruise to 25-11 win. GWC hit .545 (15 kills, three errors, 22 attack attempts), while RCC hit .100 (five kills, three errors, 20 attack attempts).
Both teams continue to OEC action on Friday, Oct. 25, when Golden West hosts the Irvine Valley College Lasers and Riverside visits the Saddleback College Gauchos at 6 p.m.
