RIVERSIDE (10-10-2012) – The Tigers, ranked 15th in the state, trailed Fullerton, ranked 20th in the state, 0-2 after two sets. Fullerton beat the Tigers in the first two sets 25-19 and 25-17. Beginning the third set, the Tigers started to show their tenacity. Middle hitter Cora Wells and outside hitter Trish Gauthier caught fire and netted four kills each in that set. On the defensive end, Thea Williams refused let a Fullerton attack hit the floor by getting nine digs of her own in the third set. RCC won the third set 25-22. In the fourth set, Riverside took control from the start. Behind nine kills from outside hitters Gauthier and Cherylain Dizon and another five kills from middle hitter Kayla Johns, the determined Tigers stayed on top the entire set, winning 25-19. The fifth and final set saw the Tigers rush out to take a generous lead over the Hornets, only to see Fullerton put a stop to the RCC attack and start producing their own points. Three key blocks from Wells and her adjoining opposite, Deborah Catanese, put a stop to a Fullerton comeback. The Tigers finished the match by winning the fifth set 15-12. The Tigers (7-4, 2-2 OEC) will face Saddleback on the road on Friday evening at 6 p.m.
