Western Nevada College Wildcats 2, at Riverside City College Tigers 0 (nonconference); Wildcats’ starting RHP Belding Has Perfect Game until Saucedo’s one-out single in Eighth
The visiting Western Nevada College (WNC) Wildcats posted a pair of runs in the top of the third inning and sophomore RHP Phillip Belding (Beaverton, OR / Westview HS) made them stand as he took a perfect game into the eighth inning, until freshman LF Bryan Saucedo (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) stroked a 1-1 fastball into a one-out, line-drive single to center field for the hosts as Western Nevada shaded the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's baseball team, 2-0, in a non-conference contest Friday evening.
In the third, freshman SS Tony Roque (Boise, ID / Bishop Kelley HS) opened the frame with an infield single deep into the hole at shortstop. With Roque running on the pitch, freshman C Colby Rice (West Salem, OR / West Salem HS) lofted a shallow fly ball down the right-field line which fell for a double as Roque raced home with the game's first run. After Rice was sacrificed to third, with two outs, freshman LF Joey Crunkilton (Puyallup, WA / Puyallup HS) singled up the middle to drive in Rice for the 2-0 lead.
Crunkilton finished by going three for three for Western Nevada (11-4), which is located in Carson City, and was a participant in the 2012 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) "JuCo" World Series.
With a lead, Belding (2-0) was in even more of a groove as his slider continued to keep the Tigers off balance. Up until the fateful eighth, Belding had not allowed anything close to a hit. With two outs in the fifth, RCC sophomore 3B Ricardo Rodriguez (Moreno Valley / Canyon Springs HS) worked the count to 3-2 before grounding out to second base. Belding needed only 99 pitches (70 strikes) as the game lasted only 1:48.
Freshman RHP Cortland Cox (Rancho Cucamonga / Alta Loma HS) went the first seven innings for Riverside (6-2) and saw his record drop to 1-2.
Both teams conclude their three-game non-conference series on Saturday, Feb. 16, with the first pitchat 12 p.m.
