at Riverside City College Tigers 13, Cuesta College Cougars 11 (non-conference);
RIVERSIDE – Posting its third victory in as many starts, the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's baseball team out-slugged the visiting Cuesta College Cougars, 13-11, in a non-conference contest Tuesday afternoon at the Evans Sports Complex.
The teams combined for 24 runs (15 earned) on 29 hits, as well as nine errors.
Spotting the Cougars a 3-0 lead, Riverside City (3-0) put up one in the bottom of the second and then rolled a five spot in the third.
Freshman SS Nicolas King (Palm Springs / Palm Springs HS) opened the inning by bunting the first pitch for a single and promptly stole second base. Freshman 2B Changeng Varela (Chino / Chino HS) walked. After a sacrifice bunt, sophomore 1B Daniel Arellano (Moreno Valley / Canyon Springs HS) walked to load the bases. King scored on a wild pitch. After a pitching change, freshman DH David Schuknecht (Palm Desert HS) delivered a sacrifice fly down the left-field line to score Varela. Arellano scored on an infield error following a fielder's choice off the bat of freshman RF Joshua Clark (Hillcrest Christian HS). Freshman DH Bryan Saucedo (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) reached first base on a wild pitch on a swinging third strike and scored, as well as Clark, on a ringing, two-run double down the left-field line off the bat of sophomore 3B Ricardo Rodriguez (Moreno Valley / Canyon Springs HS). Rodriguez led the Tigers with a three-for-four day, with two runs and three RBI.
After seven innings, RCC led, 11-6. Undaunted, Cuesta (1-3) came up with four runs in the eighth and one in the ninth. In between, the Tigers scratched out two insurance runs in the eighth.
Freshman RHP Jonah Fisher (A.B. Miller HS), the second of five pitchers utilized by Riverside, pitched two innings to get credit for the win (1-0). Freshman RHP Tanner Kiest (Yucaipa HS) pitched the final two frames to log his first save of the season.
For Cuesta, freshman 3B Zack Domingues (Visalia / El Diamante HS) led with three hits, sophomore C Brandon Oliver (Corona / Santiago HS) went two for four with two doubles and three RBI, and sophomore SS Andrew Montanari (Santa Monica HS) went two for four with three runs. Sophomore RHP Travis Beck (Visalia / Redwood HS), the second of four pitchers for the Cougars, pitched four innings and allowed seven runs (three earned) on ten hits and one walk, to get saddled with the loss (0-1).
Both teams continue non-conference action. Riverside hits the road for a three-game trip against the Fresno City College Rams beginning on Thursday, Feb. 7, at 6 p.m. Cuesta will be idle until Saturday, Feb. 9, when it hosts Canada College.
