Riverside City (1-0) plated two runs in the bottom of the second inning and added one more in the sixth for a 3-0 lead. East L.A. (0-1) countered with two runs in the top of the seventh inning to get close.
In the second stanza, the Tigers had two outs and a freshman SS Nicolas King (Palm Springs / Palm Springs HS) on first via a fielder's choice. Sophomore LF Cody Stewart (Temecula / Great Oak HS) singled into the left-center field gap and advanced to second when the throw went to third to try and catch King. With both runners on the move, sophomore CF Nick Cuckovich (Victoria, B.C., Canada) hit a dribbler down the third-base line which wound up being a two-run single.
In the sixth, the Evans Sports Complex sustained a power failure and, after a 22-minute delay, freshman C David Schuknecht (Palm Desert HS) drilled a 2-1 pitch for a single and advanced to second on the throw which sent freshman 2B Chaneng Varela (Chino HS) to third base. Sophomore 1B Daniel Arellano (Moreno Valley / Canyon Springs HS) lofted a sacrifice fly to score Varela.
In the top of the seventh for ELAC, freshman 2B Yamel Zamudio (Bell / Bell HS), walked and went to third on a double down the left-field line by sophomore CF Andrew Gutierrez (La Puente / Bishop Amat HS). After a sacrifice fly plated Zamudio, sophomore DH Joseph Tellez blooped a double just over first base and inside the right-field line as Gutierrez had to stop at third. Freshman 1B Jonathan Larson (Arcadia / Arcadia HS) ripped a bounder up the middle which went for an infield single as Gutierrez scored.
Riverside starting RHP, sophomore Edgar Gomez (Indio HS), went the first six innings and allowed only one hit – a single to right field by freshman SS Kevin Rodriguez (Pico Rivera / El Rancho HS) – with two outs in the sixth. Gomez (1-0) finished with six strikeouts (no walks) on 70 pitches (50 strikes). Sophomore RHP Joseph Molina (Redlands East Valley HS) tossed the final 1-1/3 innings to log his first save of the season.
For ELAC, sophomore RHP Sergio Luna (Los Angeles / Cathedral HS) went the first five frames plus and allowed three earned runs on two hits and two walks, but had eight strikeouts.
Both teams resume non-conference action tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 2, at 5 p.m. when Riverside hosts East L.A.
