Fullerton Scores in Every Inning, Posts 11-2 Win Over Riverside City Wednesday
RIVERSIDE -- The visiting Fullerton College (FC) Hornets scored in every inning en route an 11-2 Orange Empire Conference (OEC) victory over the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers softball team Wednesday (Mar. 15) in a game which was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule at Brown Field (Samuel C. Evans Park).
Fullerton (8-12 overall, 3-6 OEC) scored single runs in each of the first four innings before exploding for seven runs in the top of the fifth frame for the 11-2 final.
Riverside City (9-8 overall, 4-4 OEC) scored in the bottom of the first inning when sophomore1B Emily Wilcox stroked a RBI double to tie the game at 1-1.
In the second inning, RCC starting sophomore RHP Laura Mendez (Rialto - Carter HS) socked a solo home run to left field, her second circuit clout of the season, to tie the game at 2-2. Mendez eventually went the first 3.0 innings, allowed three runs (one earned) on eight hits with one walk and one strikeout as her record fell to 7-5.
Fullerton RF Anabel Mendez went three for four with two runs scored and one RBI to pace the Hornets. CF Jill Saiza socked a three-run triple in the fifth for Fullerton. Natasha Trujillo, who entered the game with no outs and two Tigers aboard in the bottom of the first, pitched 5.0 innings and allowed one run (earned) on four hits with zero walks and three strikeouts to gain the win and improve to 5-3.
Riverside will return to action on Friday, Mar. 17, when it visits the Orange Coast College (OCC) Pirates in an OEC game beginning at 2 p.m.
