Baseball Blanks Grossmont in Non-Conference Victory

It was a complete team effort for the Riverside City College baseball team on Tuesday afternoon as they hosted the Grossmont College Griffins from the second time this season. Freshman starter Ethan Sachs set the tone on the mound by carrying a no hitter into the fifth inning. He paved the way for his bullpen to dominate and the offense to follow suit leading to a 4-0 win.

Sachs, who earned his first-career start in the Orange and Black, continued to chuck the pearl efficiently in a new role. He began his outing by retiring the side in order in the top of the first. He was threatened just once in the top of the second inning, but he wiggled out of a jam in the top of the second inning by recording a strikeout, leaving runners stranded on second and third base. He capped his outing with an inning ending double play to freshman shortstop Mathew Happ.

Riverside etched its first run on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore center fielder Junior Coleman led off the inning with a two bagger. He came around to score on a sacrafice fly out off the bat of freshman catcher Steven Ramirez to snag a 1-0 lead.

Sophomore left fielder Joseph Hodapp got the ball rolling in the bottom of the second inning with a single to right field. HE came around to score on a sacrifice groundout from freshman third baseman Mathew Ivancich. After driving in the first run in the bottom of the third inning, Ramirez struck again in the bottom of the fifth inning with an RBI single, plating sophomore designated hitter Kase Warner leading to a 3-0 lead.

The Tigers added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh inning as freshman right fielder Ulises Caballero launched a deep, one-out double off of the fence in left center field to plate Warner to hand Riverside a 4-0 advantage.

The bullpen was downright dominant since Sachs was lifted in the fifth inning. Freshman southpaw Drew D'Ambra chucked two scoreless innings and fanned three batters. Freshman Lawrence Castaneda and sophomore Alexander Salazar followed suit and tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth inning, respectively, leading two the win.

No reliever allowed a hit while just allowing three baserunners from the sixth inning on. Offensively, Warner went 2-for-2 with a pair of singles and two runs scored. Ramirez recorded two RBI and one hit, while Coleman went 1-for-4 with a run scored.

Riverside (7-3) will continue action on the road against the West Los Angeles College Wildcats on Saturday, February 16 at 1 p.m.
