RCC's Peay and Cottom Advance in OEC Pairs Championship

Riverside City College competed on the first day of the Orange Empire Conference Pairs Championship and saw one pair move on to Friday's action.

Nina Peay and Jada Cottom battled to a 2-1 win (21-17, 17-21, 15-11) over Santiago Canyon College's Roxanne Costello and Ashlyn Smith to move on to the second round. The Tigers then fell in the round of the 16s in a tight contest (23-21, 21-19, 15-11) but stayed alive in the tournament to play again on Friday.

Esmeralda Aguilar and Kaylee Torres put up a fight but ultimately fell in three (21-18, 16-21, 15-7) in their opening match, while Audrey Elias and Lanah Bergen (21-16, 21-9), and Kyra Myers and Alyssa Bishop (21-16, 21-11) each dropped two-set matches in the first round.

Peay and Cottom play again on Friday against Cypress' Larissa Samano and Hailey Church, looking to remain in the hunt for a spot in the Southern California Pairs Championship in May.
