Mike played volleyball at UC Riverside as the starting defensive specialist on the men's club team in 1994-1995. He graduated from UCR in 1996 with a bachelor of science degree in mathematics and a master of science degree in applied mathematics in 1998. He has been a lecturer at UCR from 1998-present and an adjunct professor at RCC (Norco) from 2007-present.

Mike coached 16s girls' club with American Sports Organizations (ASO-Corona) in 2002-2003, and has been involved with the UCR women's volleyball program since 1996 in various capacities. He has volunteered at many local high school programs over the last decade. 

Mike is single and lives in Riverside.
