Volleyball Whips Out the Brooms in Season Finale
The Riverside City College women's volleyball team hosted its final contest of the 2017 season on Wednesday night against the Fullerton College Hornets in Orange Empire Conference (OEC) action. In a game that saw similar trends and numbers on paper, it was the Tigers who exploded on the hardwood en route to a straight-set sweep and victory over the Hornets with final set scores reading 25-14, 25-20, 25-21.
The Tigers held a positive hitting percentage in all three sets highlighted by earning a .250 hitting percentage in the first two sets.
Freshman outside hitter Marcella Rodriguez (Belize City, Belize) paced the Tigers on the offensive front by hammering home 11 kills off 30 attempts. Her kill total mark is the 10th time this season where she has landed in double-digit kills. She was also a huge factor on the defensive end by recording 13 digs.
Freshman outside hitter Kiara Oregon (Riverside, CA) recorded eight kills to go along with an impressive six aces and seven digs. Freshman outside hitter Alexus Calhoun (Riverside, CA) followed with four kills and three block assists. Freshman middle blocker Madison Bogh (Highland, CA) was a force in the middle by recording two block assists.
Freshman setter Taylor Gardner (Colton, CA) acted as the offensive gear by dishing out 20 assists. She added seven digs and a drop kill. Freshman libero Natalie Escher (Redlands, CA) continued to patrol the backline to perfection by recording a game-high 17 digs. She added an ace as well.
The Tigers finish the season with an overall record of 12-15 which included seven conference victories. Riverside will return a huge chunk of its lineup in preparation for a strong 2018 campaign.
