VICTORVILLE -- Opening the 2015 campaign at the Victor Valley College Round-robin tournament, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers Women's Volleyball team won both of its matches Friday (Sept. 4).
RCC (2-0) posted a 3-1 non-conference neutral court victory over the Santa Monica College (SMC) Corsairs (0-2) by the scores of 25-18, 22-25, 25-18, 25-23. The Tigers opened the day's action with a 3-0 non-conference win by the scores of 25-18, 25-14, 25-21 over the host Victor Valley College (VVC) Rams.
The pair of wins by RCC marked the third time in the last four seasons (2012, 2013, 2015) that it had turned the trick.
In the opener against VVC, RCC frosh middle blocker/outside hitter Lauren Reed (Redlands / Redlands HS), who already has earned a bachelor of science degree in biology from California Baptist University this past summer (2015), led the Tigers with a match-high 13 kills. Reed had five kills in set #1 and seven in set #3.
RCC sophomore setter Melissa Moe (Riverside / Poly HS '14) led with a match-high 32 assists and added ten digs. Frosh libero Sabrina Gonzaga (Moreno Valley / Citrus Hill HS '14) added a match-high 18 digs.
Against SMC, sophomore outside hitter Amanda Barker (Lake Arrowhead / Rim of the World HS '14), frosh outside hitter Lauren Wells (Corona / Woodcrest Christian HS '15) and frosh outside hitter Marissa Vialpanda (Moreno Valley / Riverside-Notre Dame HS '15) each had a team-high nine kills for RCC.
Moe added a match-high 39 assists, Barker added a team-high 19 digs and Gonzaga added 17 digs against Santa Monica.
RCC head coach Monica Hayes-Trainer, who is in her eighth season at the Tigers' helm, improved her overall record to 87-89 through Friday's matches.
Riverside's next action will be on Friday, Sept. 11, when it hosts its fifth annual Riverside Tournament with matches against the Mt. San Jacinto College Eagles (at 12 p.m.) and the Mt. San Antonio College Mounties (at 2 p.m.)
In 2014, Riverside was 6-17 overall, 3-11 (sixth place) in the Orange Empire Conference (OEC).
