RCC Wins National Southern League Championship
No. 2-ranked won the National Southern League Championship Saturday afternoon after defeating No. 6-ranked San Diego Mesa College 62-41.
The Tigers improve to 8-1 on the year and remain perfect with a 6-0 conference mark, while the Olympians drop to 7-2 overall, 4-2 in conference.
RCC finished with 619 total offensive yards, including 439 yards passing. Brady Jones was 29-for-43 with three touchdown passes.
Brandon McMasters had a stellar game with four touchdowns on eight carries, while Devyne Pearson and Jones also ran in a touchdown.
The Tigers held a 28-13 lead at halftime, but the Olympians came barreling back in the beginning of the third to keep the game interesting. SD Mesa pulled within single digits (28-20) halfway through the third, but back-to-back touchdowns from Pearson and Marquis Monroe kept the Olympians at bay, while McMasters scored with 2:45 on the clock to secure the victory.
Defensively, Ja'wuan Nickson led the Tigers with 11 tackles, including eight solo stops. Blare Sylva-Viela and Tayven Anderson each finished with six takcles.
Riverside closes out the regular season next Saturday, heading to Fullerton College for a noon kickoff.
