Bio

Every college sports program needs “The Voice,” and for 28 years, the voice for Tigers football and basketball games was that of U.S. Navy veteran Richard Hubbard.
As a public address announcer, Hubbard began his on-microphone career in 1978at Perris High School after four years as a coach for boys’ basketball and track, and 16 years working for the Perris Unified School District as a custodian, para-professional counselor, and attendance/ truancy officer. During this time he picked up the nickname “Daddy Cool,” which sticks with him to this day.

At Perris High School he announced badminton, wrestling, boys’ and girls’ basketball, track & field, and football. He also announced North High School’s boys’ basketball games. There he announced 12 out of 15 title games during the Raincross Tournament and was tapped to announce the Press-Enterprise Basketball Classic.

In the early ‘80s, Hubbard came across town to Riverside City College and quickly became known for his sonorous delivery. Following two years announcing football games, including the Tigers’ win at the Potato Bowl, he was asked by Coach Mike Barnes to cover women’s basketball. A few years later, Hubbard added men’s basketball to his PA duties and continued to voice Tigers games until 2008.

Richard Hubbard served as the “Voice of the Tigers” for football and men’s and women’s basketball for many years, bringing the excitement of the game directly to the fans as the Tigers’ public address announcer. His colorful play calls enlivened Wheelock Stadium and Wheelock Gym, encouraging fans to be the 12th player on the field and the 6th player on the court.
