Tigers Gain Split Saturday at Cuesta Tournament; Improve to 12-2 Overall
SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Gaining a split of its last two games at the Cuesta College Tournament, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's water polo squad saw its win streak get snapped at seven, but started a new string.
Riverside (12-2 overall) saw its seven-game win streak come to an end against Orange Empire Conference (OEC) rival Golden West College (GWC) as the Rustlers won, 10-8. In the Tigers' nightcap against OEC rival (and defending state champion) Fullerton, RCC won, 12-8.
In the opener, an 8:30 a.m. start against GWC, the Tigers fell behind, 3-1, after the first quarter, but then forged ties at 5-5 (at halftime) and 6-6 (after three quarters.
Against GWC, RCC frosh attacker Mary Myers (Riverside / Martin Luther King, Jr. HS '15) led with three goals, one assist and five steals, while frosh attacker Citlali Salazar (Eastvale / Eleanor Roosevelt HS '15) had one goal, two assists and four steals.
Against Fullerton, RCC led, 4-2, after the first quarter, 7-3 at halftime, and 11-7 after three quarters.
In the nightcap against Fullerton, frosh two-meter offensive player Emily Martin (Yucaipa / Yucaipa HS '15) led the Tigers with five goals. Sophomore two-meter defensive player Jaclyn Myers (Riverside / Martin Luther King, Jr. HS '13) had five assists and one steal. Salazar added three goals, Mary Myers added one goal, two assists, and seven steals. Frosh attacker Sarina Briseno (Riverside / Poly HS '15) added one, goal, two assists and five steals.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Chang (Laie, HI / Kahuku (Oahu) HS '14) recorded seven saves against GWC and 11 saves against Fullerton.
Riverside will be idle until Wednesday, Oct. 14, when it greets the Orange Coast College Pirates in an OEC game at 3 p.m.
