RCC Women Water Poloists (7-1) Win Three of Four at Chaffey Tournament Over The Weekend
ALTA LOMA --Winning three of four games at the Chaffey College Invitational this past weekend (Sept. 18-19), the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's water polo squad will turn its focus toward the opening of the Orange Empire Conference (OEC) schedule this week.
Riverside (7-1 overall) fell from the ranks of the unbeaten when it lost to then-undefeated (5-0) San Diego Mesa College (SDMC), 6-5, to open RCC's participation in the tournament last Friday (Sept. 18).
Against SDMC, frosh two-meter offensive player Emily Martin (Yucaipa / Yucaipa HS '15) led RCC with two goals and frosh attacker Mary Myers (Riverside / M.L. King HS '15) nabbed six steals. while sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Chang (Laie, HI / Kahuku (Oahu) HS '14) recorded four saves. Later Saturday, Riverside topped Cerritos, 21-7.
On Saturday (Sept. 19), Riverside posted a 15-7 win over the Ventura College Pirates. Martin and Myers each scored five goals, while sophomore attacker Kelley Geurts (Murrieta / Murrieta Valley HS '14) -- who is pictured -- scored twice. Chang had 11 saves in goal.
Later on Saturday, RCC scored nine straight goals in one stretch, led, 9-1, and went on to a 22-3 over the Fresno City College (FCC) Rams. Myers had five goals, Martin added four scores and frosh goalkeeper Ariana Olmos (Redlands / Redlands East Valley HS '15) had ten saves.
Riverside will open OEC play against the perennially strong Golden West College (GWC) Rustlers on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 3 p.m. GWC won the 2013 state championship.
RCC will host its first home game on Wednesday, Oct. 7, when it greets the Santa Ana College Dons in an OEC game at 3 p.m.
