Pirates return favor on Tigers with 6-3 win

RIVERSIDE -- In their biggest match of the year, the Orange Coast College women's tennis team picked up it's biggest win, topping previously-unbeaten Riverside City College, 6-3, on Tuesday at RCC.

After the Tigers came to OCC and pulled off a 5-4 win on Feb. 29, it was the Pirates' turn to spoil the home cooking, dropping RCC to 12-1 overall, 6-1 in the Orange Empire Conference. The win improves OCC to 16-1 overall, 5-1 in the OEC.

Coast trailed 2-1 in doubles play, with its lone win coming at No. 2 as the duo of Rhea Gagnepain/Leanne Pascua held off the RCC duo of Kaden Richards/Monica Carrillo, 8-6.

Needing to answer back in singles play, the Pirates took 5-of-6, including a crucial three-set win for Olivia Sipiora at No. 3 as she topped Mimi Reynoso, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.

Other straight-set wins for the Pirates came from Tori Varela (6-2, 7-5), Gagnepain (6-3, 7-6), Merrit Dubourdieu (6-2, 6-2) and Pascua (6-1, 6-1).

The Pirates will travel to Fullerton College on Thursday to take on the Hornets, beginning at 2 p.m.
