Mityurin & Lee Win ITA SoCal Regional Doubles Championships, Qualify for Nationals

The Riverside City College tennis program got off to an early start this season by competing in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Fall Regional Championships this past weekend. A combination of familiar faces and newcomers made significant waves in the tournament and qualified to compete on a national scale.

Riverside competed in the Southern California regional in the tournament and faced off against strong competition highlighted by an outside squad in Eastern Arizona – a powerhouse of Arizona schools and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

Sophomore tandem Gleb Mityurin and Chris Lee highlighted the efforts by reigning supreme in the doubles brackets. They swept through the completion with a straight-set victory in the championship contest. The duo qualified for the nationwide tournament, which will be held in Rome, Georgia next week. It is the first time in school history that the Tigers have qualified a doubles team to compete in the ITA Championships.

In the nationwide affair, the duo will compete against NJCAA teams for a chance to advance to the "Super Bowl" of the ITA Championships that will hold all collegiate levels of competition including NCAA Division I, II, II and NAIA squads.

Sophomore duo Maxelle Bernie and Torrey Mateljan, who return as the top doubles team for the women's team, played extremely well by reaching the championship game. They were edged in three sets, but have been submitted for an at-large bid to the tournament. Selections will be made in the ensuing days.
