Tigers Shutout Southwestern in RCC's Season Opener; RCC (1-0) Hosts Santa Barbara City Thursday

RIVERSIDE -- Having three individuals post shutouts in singles matches, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's tennis team opened its 2017 campaign with a 9-0 non-conference win over the visiting Southwestern College (SwC) Jaguars Tuesday (Jan. 31) at the Fran Bushman Tennis Courts on the RCC campus. 

Riverside City (1-0 overall) was supposed to open its season last Saturday (Jan. 28) against Mt. San Antonio College, but that match was canceled.

Sophomore Gabrielle Ante (Riverside / Arlington HS) -- who is pictured -- won, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2 singles and won, 8-0, at No. 2 doubles along with teammate Samantha Moreto (Riverside / M.L. King HS '15).

During the preseason, as of November 2016, RCC  was ranked fourth in the Southland, up five places from ninth (2016 postseason poll), according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) / California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) women's tennis poll, which is sponsored by Oracle.

Among the individually ranked Tigers are sophomore Gabrielle Ante (Riverside / Arlington HS), who is ranked fourth in SoCal. Frosh Ellia Rosado is ranked sixth, sophomore Samantha Moreto (Riverside / M.L. King HS '15) is ranked 17th, sophomore Breyer Floyd (Redlands / Redlands HS) is ranked 21st, and sophomore Ashley Bauman (Riverside / Arlington HS) is ranked 22nd.

RCC's ranked doubles teams include Ante / Moreto, ranked eighth, and Bauman / Floyd, ranked tenth.

The 2016 RCC Tigers finished 9-8 overall, 2-6 (fourth place). in the Orange Empire Conference (OEC). Through 17 seasons at the RCC helm, head coach Nikki Bonzoumet has an overall won-lost dual match record of 207-81-1 (111-58 in Orange Empire Conference action).
