Tigers Men's Water Poloists Lose Twice: 15-9 to Long Beach & 11-10 to Palomar
RIVERSIDE -- Losing a pair of games in its own fourth annual mini tournament, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's water polo squad will next prepare for an Orange Empire Conference (OEC) game.
Riverside (6-10 overall) lost, 15-9, to the defending state champion Long Beach City College (LBCC) Vikings in a morning (9:05 a.m.) game. In an afternoon contest, RCC lost, 11-10, to the Palomar College Comets to conclude action on Friday (Oct. 17) at the Riverside Aquatics Center on the RCC campus.
Against LBCC, RCC fell behind, 3-1, after the first quarter and was behind, 9-2, at halftime. Freshman driver Adrian Jacobson (Redlands / Redlands '14), who is pictured, scored three goals to lead RCC.
Against Palomar, the Tigers trailed, 3-2, after the first quarter. Freshman Joseph Rivas (Lake Elsinore / Temescal Canyon HS) had four tallies. Freshman goalie Jeremy Mariscal (Santa Ana / Jurupa Valley '14) recorded six saves in the loss to Long Beach City and eight saves in the loss to Palomar.
"A close first quarter proved to be the kind of game the four quarters would provide," said RCC second-year head men's water polo coach Jason Northcott, in reference to the loss to Palomar. "Seven lead changes and a loud home crowd made for a tense hour of competition that ended in a tough loss for the Tigers. Three shots missed directly in front of the goal in the last 35 seconds of the game.
"Joseph Rivas led the team in scoring (four goals) and in poise," continued Northcott. "Justin Rohn shut down several strong Palomar centers at two-meter defense and represented the type of strong, consistent mindset that we want our team identifies as having."
Next for Riverside (2-1 OEC), the Tigers will host the Golden West College (GWC) Rustlers (16-2 overall, 3-0 OEC) on Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 3 p.m.
