WALNUT -- Splitting a pair of decisions Friday night (Sept. 9), the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's volleyball team defeated the College of the Desert (COD) Roadrunners and then lost to the host Mt. San Antonio College (MSAC) Mounties at MSAC's Triangular Tournament.
Riverside City (4-2 overall) defeated COD, 3-1, by the set scores of 25-19, 25-23, 23-25, 25-17, before winning the first two sets against MSAC, only to see the Mounties fight back to win the match by the set scores of 24-26, 19-25, 25-23, 25-14, 15-11.
Earlier in the day, MSAC swept COD, 25-23, 25-7, 25-20.
Against COD, RCC sophomore outside hitter Huafa Saulala (Morgan Hill / Live Oak HS '13 / BYU-Hawai'i) had a team-high 12 kills and sophomore middle hitter Tiarah McDaniel (Compton / Paramount HS '14 / Cerritos CC) led the Tigers with 11 kills.
Sophomore setter Sabrina Gonzaga (Perris / Citrus Hill '15) had a team-high 36 assists. Frosh defensive specialst Paula Romero (Riverside / Poly HS '14) had a team-high 14 digs, followed closely by sophomore outside hitter Lauren Wells (Corona / Woodcrest Christian HS '15) -- who is pictured -- and Gonzaga with ten digs each.
Against MSAC, Wells led RCC with 18 kills, Gonzaga dished out 30 assists, and Romero pulled up a team-high 19 digs, followed by sophomore outside hitter Marissa Vialpando (Moreno Valley / Riverside - Notre Dame HS '15) with 18 digs and Wells with 15 digs.
Riverside returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 14, when it hosts the Cerritos College Falcons in a non-conference match beginning at 5 p.m.
