VICTORVILLE -- The Riverside City College (RCC) Women's Volleyball team opened its season last Friday (Sept. 2) with a pair of victories; a 3-0 win over the Cerro Coso College (CCC) Coyotes and a 3-0 win over the host Victor Valley College (VVC) Rams.
Riverside City (2-0) defeated Cerro Coso by the set scores of 25-4, 25-6, 25-10 before sweeping the host VVC Rams, 25-23, 25-18, 25-17.
In the season-opening victory over Cerro Coso, sophomore outside hitter Lauren Wells (Corona / Woodcrest Christian HS '15) led the Tigers with 14 kills and sophomore outside hitter Marissa Vialpando (Moreno Valley / Riverside - Notre Dame HS '15) added 11 kills. Wells also had a team-high 11 digs. Sophomore setter/libero Sabrina Gonzaga (Perris / Citrus Hill '15) had a team-high 18 assists and frosh setter MacKenzie Lunney (Corona / Riverspring Charter HS '16) chipped in with 12 assists.
In the win over Victor Valley, Wells and Vialpando each had a team-high 18 kills and Wells added ten digs. Gonzaga dished out a team-high 39 assists and frosh defensive specialist Paula Romero (Riverside / Poly HS '14) had a team-high 13 digs.
Riverside returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 7, when it hosts the Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) Eagles at 5 p.m. and the Citrus College Owls at 7 p.m. in RCC's Fifth Annual Three-way Tournament.

RCC head coach Monica Hayes-Trainer, who begins her ninth season at the Tigers' helm, brought an overall record of 101-97 (through the previous eight seasons, 2008-15) into last Friday's matches. Serving as RCC assistant coaches alongside Hayes-Trainer are fourth-year associate head coach Jamie Hofman (nee' DeKiewiet; UC Riverside), as well as Mike Curtis (UC Riverside), and first year assistant Liz Younglove (Concordia-Irvine U. '13).
In 2015, Riverside was 16-8 overall, 8-6 (fifth place) in the Orange Empire Conference (OEC), and earned a berth in the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern California Regional Playoffs where it posted a 3-0 home win against the No. 18-seeded Chaffey College Panthers (Nov. 21) before having its season with a 3-0 road loss to the NO. 2-seeded Los Angeles Pierce College Brahmas (Nov. 24).
