Tigers Sweep Cerritos, 3-0, Wednesday; Improve to 6-1 Overall.
RIVERSIDE -- Winning its second straight match and sixth of seven to open the season, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers Women's Volleyball team swept the visiting Cerritos College Falcons, 3-0, Wednesday (Sept. 23), by the set scores of 25-16, 25-18, 25-18.
Riverside (6-1 overall) opened the first set with leads of 2-0, 4-2, and 7-3, before Cerritos forged a tie at 8-8. RCC then took the lead for good and sprinted to a 14-8 lead and then kept the bulk of that advantage the rest of the way en route to a 25-16 win.
In the second set, there were ten tie scores and five lead changes before the Tigers extended a 13-12 lead to 16-12 and kept the Falcons at bay as RCC won, 25-18.
In the third set, RCC never trailed as it led 4-0 and 9-5 before Cerritos tied the set at 9-9. From there, Riverside stretched a 12-10 lead into a 22-12 advantage and won, 25-18.
For RCC, frosh outside hitter Lauren Wells (Corona / Woodcrest Christian HS '15) led a balanced RCC attack with 13 kills. RCC sophomore setter Melissa Moe (Riverside / Poly HS '14) had a match-high 36 assists. Frosh libero Sabrina Gonzaga (Moreno Valley / Citrus Hill HS '14) added a match-high nine digs for RCC.
Cerritos (5-2 overall), an original member of the South Coast Conference, was led by outside hitter Nicole Spigner with nine kills, setter Natalie Caravantes had 23 assists and Monica Vega had seven digs.
At 6-1, the Tigers are off to their best start since 2010 when they won their first eight matches and were 11-1 heading into Orange Empire Conference (OEC) action.
Riverside's next match will be on Tuesday, Sept. 29, when it visits the San Bernardino Valley College Wolverines in a nonconference match at 5 p.m.
In an exhibition on Saturday, Sept. 26, the Tigers will host their previous players in an alumnae match beginning at 5 p.m.
