Women’s Basketball Cruises on Coaches vs. Cancer Night
The Riverside City College women's basketball team hosted its first home game in nearly a week as they faced off against the Fullerton College Hornets in conference action. The Tigers cruised to a dominating victory to snap a two-game conference skid.
Riverside celebrated Coaches vs. Cancer night by wearing pink uniforms and collecting donations for the American Cancer Society. Multiple players shared stories about how cancer has affected their lives. Sophomores Shannon Jordan and Neveah Manning shared who they were playing for tonight, along with Head Coach Alicia Berber. The pink jerseys sparked an offense that was firing on all cylinders. It was a fast-paced game. The Tigers handled it with ease by limiting turnovers to 13, which was 21 turnovers less than their previous outing. They forced 21 Fullerton turnovers and capitalized with 18 points off turnovers.
Riverside shot well from distance as seen in a 35.7 percent from long range. They shot 38.1 percent overall from the floor and outrebounded the Hornets 55-38.
Freshman guard N'Dya Parks led the team in scoring with 17 points off the bench.
"It felt great tonight," said Parks. "We came out and got the win and that's all that matters."
Parks has acted as a staple in the offense by consistently contributing in various ways. She has started in just two games, but has landed in double digit scoring six times and currently averages 7.8 points-per-game.
"I do what I do every day to prepare. I get my shots up every morning and night, and I hope for the best."
The Tigers are currently sitting in third place in conference after suffering consecutive losses to Irvine Valley and Cypress, but Parks is confident in the road ahead.
"We have to keep on working on our defense every day. That is our main point. We have to improve our IQ in the game and keep reading defenses and the offenses that they run."
Sophomore Neveah Manning dropped 12 points and was one rebound shy from a double-double, while sophomore duo Shannon Jordan and Maxine Najera each flushed 10 points. Najera added six rebounds while Jordan dished out two assists and pocketed a steal.
