Softball Experiences Highs and Lows in Friday Doubleheader

Softball Experiences Highs and Lows in Friday Doubleheader

The Riverside City College softball team hosted a pair of non-conference contests on Friday night as they played the East Los Angeles College Huskies and the Sacramento City College Panthers under the lights at Evans Sports Complex. The Tigers went 1-1 on the night highlighted by a strong, 3-1 victory over the Huskies. However, they ended the night with an 8-0 defeat to the Panthers.

In the victory, Riverside rode a two spot in the bottom of the first inning that gave them enough leverage for the win. Sophomore third baseman Danielle Lopez sent freshman right fielder Samantha Fowlkes home on an RBI ground out to second base. Sophomore designated player Maryjane Davila followed with a followed with an RBI single to left field, scoring freshman shortstop Karter Williams, leading to a 2-0 lead.

Two runs was all sophomore starting pitcher Lorena Fitch needed as he set herself to crusie control and was lights out. Despite allowing just one run in the third inning, she was efficient and utilized an errorless defense to halt the Huskies from forcing any threatening damage.

The Tigers added an insurance run in the fifth inning with Williams touching home on a pass ball. From then on, sophomore reliever Brianna Arroyo entered in the sixth inning and slammed the door for her first-career save leading to the victory.

Arroyo was dominant in the final two frames by recording a punch out and not allowing a single hit. Fitch fanned two batters and allowed just one run off four hits leading to the win.

Lopez and Davila had the lone RBI of the game, while freshman catcher Alicia Rivera and sophomore second baseman Breanna Ceballos went 2-for-3 on the night.

Riverside (3-1) will continue action on Monday, February 4 against the Citrus College Owls at home at 3 p.m.
