Men’s Track & Field Competes Against Best of the Best, Hill Wins Long Jump
The Riverside City College men's track and field program competed in the 44th Annual Aztec Invitational on Saturday against the best competition the collegiate field has to offer. The Tigers faced off against NCAA Division I teams that featured USC, Arizona State, University of California, University of Washington, Long Beach State University, University of Oregon and many more. The Tigers were able to place sixth overall ahead of 12 Division I competitors.
Riverside was the lone two-year school invited to the meet. USC placed first overall with a point total of 138, followed by Arizona State at 91 and California at 89. The Tigers finished with 40 points, edging out Oregon by three points.
Sophomore Darius Hill was the story of the day as he leaped to a first-place finish in the Long Jump (25' 1 ¾"). He leaped over a foot better than Azusa Pacific's Jermel Jones II to take home the gold.
Sophomore Ernesto Ruiz hauled in the silver medal in the 3000 Steeplechase (9:41.65), while sophomore Vincent Navarro followed with a fourth place showing in the 3000 Steeplechase (9:52.78).
Sophomore Joshua Hornsby impressed with a fifth-place mark in the 110 M Hurdles (14.04), while sophomore Gavyn Condit continued to hold down the distance squad. He finished fourth overall in the 5000 M (15:23.07).
The 1600 M Relay squad that featured freshman Mekhi Gilmore, sophomore Kyle Reden, freshman Elijah Davis and Hornsby finished fifth overall (3:18.52). Reden continued on with a sixth-place mark in the 800 M (1:52.25).
Sophomore Donal Aluesi landed in the top-15 in two events highlighted by a 12th place mark in the Discus (148' 10"). He capped his showing with a 13th place mark in the Hammer (166').
