Dear Senator Newman and Assembly member Mike Fong,

As a community college student attending Riverside City College, I am writing to you regarding the unforeseen negative impacts the removal of Lifelong Learning and Self-Development courses (LLSD) and elimination of Area E within the currently proposed CAL-getc higher education general education pattern looks to have on community college disproportionately impacted students and student-athletes.

Assembly member Marc Berman authored AB 928, and I am seeking your assistance to help me communicate to the intersegmental committee of the academic senate (ICAS) and the California State University (CSU) the need for the Lifelong Learning and Self-Development (LLSD) area to remain and serve as a CSU lower division graduation requirement instead of restricting it to a CSU upper-division general education requirement. This would allow classes in this area to be taken at the community college level in the first two years of a college education at a community college, as opposed to only an upper-division requirement that must be taken at the university level.

As a community college student, I support the goal of streamlining the associate degree for Transfer.

As a community college student, I am concerned the pathway identified by ICAS would severely and disproportionally impact students of color by excluding lifelong learning and self-development courses including Kinesiology, Health, and Counseling.

As a community college student, I am concerned about the effect on the student-athlete population as more than 75% of whom are students of color. Athletes are full-time students with the highest transfer rates to UC, CSU, and other 4-year baccalaureate granting institutions. The existing proposed implementation of AB 928 will decimate athletic programs at the community colleges.

As a community college student, I support the statewide academic senate's proposal urging California State University (CSU) to preserve the Lifelong Learning and Self-Development area as a CSU graduation requirement instead of restricting it to a CSU upper division general education requirement. This would allow classes in this area to be taken at the community college level.

Sincerely,
