Women’s Tennis Shows No Mercy in Season Opener

The Riverside City College women's tennis program kicked off its 2019 campaign in a non-conference contest against the Southwestern College Jaguars. Riverside displayed utter dominance in their season opener by sweeping the courts by the final score of 9-0.

Freshman Torrey Mateljan kicked off her Tiger career with a dominant victory as the top singles player by the final score of 6-0, 6-2. Freshman Hannah Stevenson accomplished the same feat by earning her first career win at the number two position at 6-1, 6-1.

Sophomore Heather Graf acted as the number three and earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory, while freshman Maxelle Bernie earned a 6-2, 6-3 win as the number four.

The Tigers were dominant in the doubles game as they did not drop a single set. Bernie and Mateljan teams up as the top doubles team leading to an 8-0 win. Freshman Yasmin Johnson and Graf reeled in an 8-0 victry as the number two doubles team, while sophomore Emilia Lopez and Stevenson finished with an 8-0 victory as the third doubles squad.

Riverside (1-0) will continue action at home against San Diego City College on Tuesday, February 29 at 2 p.m.
