Softball Earns Fourth-Consecutive Win

After losing three-straight contest in the month of February, the Riverside City College softball team has rattled off four-consecutive victories since then while pushing their record above .500. The Tigers traveled to Santa Maria, CA to take on the Allan Hancock College Bulldogs in a non-conference showdown on Saturday afternoon looking to haul in their fourth victory in as many games. They did just that behind dominant pitching and strong offense en route to a 9-0 mercy rule win.

The Tigers did nearly 90 percent of their damage in the top of the second inning by etching a snowman on the board. Sophomore first baseman Jocelyn Ontiveros, freshman shortstop Karter Williams and freshman catcher Zinaida Preciado were contagious with two-RBI doubles as they each recorded one, respectively. Freshman second baseman Savanna Fowlkes notched an RBI single in the inning, while freshman right fielder Danielle Melendez drew a bases load walk leading the eight-run melee.

Riverside added an insurance run in the top of the fourth inning with a sacrifice ground out by freshman third baseman Danielle Lopez, scoring Melendez, thus leading to a 9-0 victory in five innings.

Freshman pitcher Marissa-Lena Nares was untouchable as she tossed a complete-game shutout. He retired the side in order twice on the day leading to a pair of punch outs.

Ontiveros recorded a team-high two hits to go along with two RBI. Williams and Preciado drove in two runs, while Melendez scored twice.

Riverside (10-8, 2-4 OEC) will continue non-conference action on Tuesday, March 12 against the San Diego City College Knights at 5 p.m. Follow live stats at www.rccathletics.com
