
Riverside Sees Multiple Athletes Advance to SoCal Finals
Riverside City College saw multiple athletes qualify for the SoCal Regional Championship Meet at Saturday's prelims.
Five Tigers will vie for the hammer championship as Isaiah Butler posted the best mark at 50.10 meters. Adam Torres (45.15 meters), Omar Sanchez (43.35 meters), Joseph Garcia (42.02 meters) and Lorenzo Smith (40.37 meters) also qualified for next week's finals.
Another five Riverside throwers will compete in the shot put championship after Jace Collins (14.72 meters), Justice Brown (14.40 meters) and Butler (14.30 meters) posted the three-best throws of the day. Torres also qualified with a throw of 13.24 meters, along with James Padilla (13.13 meters).
Five Tigers also earned their spots in the discus finals, led by Butler with a mark of 48.22 meters. Garcia followed in 43.00 meters, while Sanchez posted a mark of 41.86 meters. Collins (40.58 meters) and Brown (38.46 meters) also join the mix.
Bryson Williamson posted the best mark in the high jump at 2.0 meters to move on to next week's championship. Kendrick Bracy just missed out on the finals, posting a 1.85 meter jump in prelims to take 10th.
Marcellus Linton had the best preliminary time in the 100-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 10.49 seconds. Jason Sherman will join him in next week finale after running the race in 10.67 seconds.
The duo will also challenge for the 200-meter SoCal championship after posting respective prelim times of 21.02 and 21.34 seconds.
Devyn Smith qualified for the triple jump with a mark of 14.07 meters, while Tony Wright (13.34 meters), Jason Allen (13.21 meters) and Bracy (13.20 meters) will join him in the finals. Smith also grabbed the last spot in the long jump with a 6.28 meter prelims jump.
Rowan Hudson won his heat in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.98 seconds to secure his spot in the finale with Tschaikowsky Brown (15.28 seconds).
Hudson also qualified in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.57. Fellow Tiger Daniel Agbelusi joins him in the mix after finishing with a time of 54.36.
James Henderson qualified in the pole mark with a prelims mark of 41.39 meters.
Jared Schulte and Orlando Collins each qualified for the 400-meter race with respective times of 48.52 and 49.04 seconds.
Kailil O'Brien secured his spot in the 3K steeplechase with a prelim time of 9:32.23 and also will race for the 10K championship after coming in 31:50.32 in the prelims. Edward Garcia also qualified for the 10K championship (32.45.61).
Martin Sandoval qualified for the 1500-meter race with a time of 4:02.66.
The Tigers' 4x100 relay team won their heat in 41.31 seconds to secure their spot in the championship.
