No. 1 Football Earns South’s Top Seed Following Undefeated Season, Set to Host No. 4 Ventura

The Riverside City College football team has finished the regular season undefeated for the second time in the last three years and subsequently earned the top seed in this year's California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern Regional Playoffs. The Tigers are set to host the fourth-seeded Ventura College Pirates (7-3) on Saturday, November 26 at 2 p.m. at San Bernardino Valley College.

Tickets · Live Stream · Live Stats · Directions

Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. and tickets can be purchased online through the CCCAA's Hometown Ticketing box office. There will still be an option to purchase tickets at the booth the day of the event, but we highly encourage all patrons to purchase tickets ahead of time. Tickets will be $12 for general admission and $8 for students with a valid ID, children under 11 years old and senior citizens 60 years of age and older.

The game will be live-streamed free of charge compliments of RiversideTV. The game will be played at San Bernardino Valley College in San Bernardino, CA. Please refer to all hyper links above for further information.

The Tigers and Pirates have become familiar foes over the past five years, as they have faced off in the playoffs three times during that span. Riverside currently holds a 2-1 record against the Pirates after recently defeating them in 2021 after Ventura was tabbed as the top seed and Riverside the fourth seed. The Pirates defeated Riverside in 2018 after making an improbably run as the fourth seed, while Riverside defeated them in 2017 to advance to the Southern Championship game.

Riverside was the only National Division team to complete a perfect 10-0 season to earn their ninth-consecutive conference championship. As a team, they averaged 44.9 points-per-game (third in the state) and amassed an average of 592.3 yards-per-game (second in the state), while earning a state-pacing 5,923 total yards. The Tigers won seven games by at least two scores. While Riverside proved they can blow any team out of the water, they also validated their ability to win close games highlighted by defeating Mt. San Antonio 35-33 in a triple-overtime thriller. Mt. SAC is the third seed entering into the Southern Regional Championships.

Leading the charge is sophomore quarterback Jake Retzlaff who has been captaining the Tigers under center all season.

J. Retzlaff, who will likely be tabbed the Offensive Player of the Year for the second-consecutive season, leads the state with 377 passing YPG, 36 passing touchdowns and 3,770 passing yards. In each game this season, he has completed at least 20 passes highlighted by a 33-completion game in the season opening victory over Mt. San Jacinto. His competition percentage has been 53 percent or higher in every start, which features an 80 percent completion rate in a win over Golden West.

On two different occasions, he surpasses the 500-yard passing mark featuring a record-breaking 529-yard game against Mt. San Jacinto. His mark broke the single-game passing yard record along with breaking the total touchdowns thrown by a debuting quarterback at six. He has thrown at least one touchdown pass in all but one game highlighted by two six-touchdown pass games and two five-touchdown pass games. He has been named the Southern California Football Association (SFCA) Offensive Player of the Week twice for his efforts.

J. Retzlaff has many targets to choose from, but none better than sophomore wide receiver Reggie Retzlaff.

The Retzlaff brothers, who joined forces for the first time since their Corona Centennial years, have been electrifying to watch and a serious problem for opposing defenses. R. Retzlaff was been a secondary's nightmare as he currently leads the state with 1,150 receiving yards, 115 receiving YPG and 16 receiving touchdowns. He is the only receiver in the state that has accumulated more than 1,000 receiving yards and averages more than 100 yards YPG through the air.

He has hauled in over a bill through the air in four-consecutive games and six games total, while also catching 10 or more passes in three games. Additionally, he has caught 21 passes in the past two games and has scored eight touchdowns in the past three games. He is coming off a mammoth game that saw him haul in 11 catches for 280 yards and three touchdowns earning him SCFA Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Sophomore Roshawn Lacy follows with 32 receptions for 479 yards and five touchdowns, while sophomore Norbert Espadron follows with 31 catches for 389 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore Juwan Tucker has found the end zone seven times on the season as well.

The ground game was slow to start, but the Tigers picked it up leading to an average of 202 rushing YPG. Leading the pack is freshman Bryce Strong who has carted the rock 77 times for 497 yards and four touchdowns. His best game came in the triple-OT winner against Mt. SAC where he carried the ball 19 times for 146 yards and two touchdowns. All three marks are career-highs.

J. Retzlaff leads the team in rushing touchdowns with six, while ranking second on the team with 454 rushing yards. A true dual-threat quarterback. Sophomore Jacquez Jones follows with 70 totes for 359 yards and two touchdowns, while sophomore Robert Valentine has found the end zone on three occasions.

The Riverside defense has been strong by allowing just 21.3 points-per-game and a mere 104.8 average rushing yards-per-game during the season; nearly half of what the Tiger's offense is putting up.

Leading the defensive brigade is a pair of linebackers in sophomore duo Gage Summers and Arturo Orozco.

Summers leads the Tigers with 49 tackles and 6.5 of them going for a loss of 24 yards. In 10 games, he has recorded at least one tackle, which included a monster 11-tackle game in a comeback win over Cerritos. He has recorded five or more tackles in five games with two back-to-back seven tackles games in mid-October. He has recovered one fumble as well. Orozco has been a big playmaker as he has recorded two double-digit tackles games highlighted by a 13-tackle performance in a win over Canyons. He has recorded 3.5 sacks and recovered one fumble.

There may be no better defensive back in the state of California then sophomore Demarco Moorer.

Moorer, who is creeping up on the single-season interceptions record, currently leads the state with eight picks. He is two shy of tying the record set by former safety Shawn Dorseau '19. He was electric in the Long Beach game as he picked off the quarterback on three separate occasions, which tied a long standing single-season RCC record held by Shannon Duncan (year unknown). He has notched two double-digit interception games after rising up for two interceptions in win over Canyons. Furthermore, he ranks third on the team in total tackles with 40.

The kicking game has been money as sophomore Jacob Marroquin leads the state with 105 total points. He ranks just outside of the top-10 with an 89 percent conversion rating, but leads the state with 18 field goal attempts. He has booted home 16 with his long going for 43 yards. He has also knocked home all 57 extra point attempts.
