Track & Field Hosts SoCal Prelims, Sits Atop after Strong Throw Showing

It was all positive for the Riverside City College track and field program on Saturday as they hosted the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern Regional prelims. Riverside got off to a strong start as they earned top marks and qualified numerous athletes for next week's finals.

Both men and women current sit in first place after a handful of events were scored as final. The men currently grasp first place with 31 points, while the women mirror the first-place slot with 45 points.

For the women, the Tigers nearly swept the podium in the Hammer as freshman Tayler Salley earned the gold medal (154' 8"), while freshman Keiana Turner followed with a second place finish (150' 11"). Sophomore Angelique Hudson continued to pace the state with a first-place toss in the Shot Put (44' 11.5"). Sophomore Gabriela Sanabria nearly placed first in the Javelin after leading for three of the final four rounds, but she was eventually edged out and place second overall (125').

Freshman Savannah Dinco placed second in the 3,000 M Race Walk (24:07.78) while sophomore Sujey Esteva landed on the podium in the 10,000 M with a third place finish (40:01.98).

The men performed well in the throwing events highlighted sophomore Marcos Gonzalez's first place finish in the Javelin (182' 8"). Freshman Patrick Maria followed with a second place finish (173' 1"). Sophomore Alec Jones placed third overall in the Shot Put (49'1 1").

Freshman Garret Smith mirrored her second place finish in the 3,000 M Race Walk (22:10.06).

In the preliminary rounds, sophomore Antonio Mitchell snapped the tape in the 100 M (10.12), which bested the state meet mark of 10.17 set in 2001. He backed his showing with a top finish in the 200 M (20.84).

Freshman Mohamed Mohammed placed first in the 800 M (1:55.85), while sophomore Enrique Villa placed second overall in the 1,500 M (4:00.08). Sophomore Dillon Lay crossed the finish line in third place in the 400 M Hurdles (55.07).

Sophomore Tyler Harp placed second in the Pole Vault (14' 7.25").

Freshman Annayah Pelt dominated the 400 M (57.24) to earn the top spot. She followed her performance with a fourth place finish in the 200 M (24.92). Freshman Alana Wilson finished slightly ahead in third place in the 200 M (24.60).

Sophomore Madeline Corner earned the third-strongest mark in the 400 M Hurdles (1:03.46)
