Preview: Track & Field Set to Host Top Teams at RCC Open

For the fourth time this season and the second time in the month of March, the Riverside City College track & field program will compete on their home turf against some of the strongest competition in the State. The Tigers are set to host the RCC Open featuring the likes of top community college competitors mixed with talent outside of the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA).

The community college field will be comprised of Mt. San Antonio, El Camino, Cuesta, Cuyamaca, San Bernardino and San Diego Mesa. Joining the field is Division II San Bernardino and the men's Korean National team.

Based on current times listed on Direct Athletics, the Tigers can be easily viewed as one of the strongest schools in the State. Riverside owns nine of the top marks in the state with the men being responsible for five and the women owning four.

Freshman Annayah Pelt holds a state-best mark in the 400 M with a time of 57.57 which is approximately two second faster than the second-best time. Sophomore Sujey Esteva hold the top spot in the 3,000 M with a mark of 10:40.21 which was set on her home track.

The women's 4 x 400 M Relay team ranks tops in the state at a mark of 3:46.29. The team is comprised of Jayea McMillian, Alana Wilson, Madeline Corner and Pelt. Along with being on the top 4 x 400 M Relay, Corner is approximately two seconds behind the state-best mark in the 400 M hurdles at a clip of 1:03.94.

The throws team is represented by sophomore Angelique Hudson. She owns a state-best 43' 11.25" in the Shot Put which was set at the RCC Invitational.

The men display five state-pacing marks in various areas. Freshman Mohamed Mohammed owns a state-best 1:54.25 mark in the 800 M which was set at the RCC Invitational. Sophomore Enrique Villa recently earned a season-best 4:26.25 in the one mile run at the Ben Brown Invitational, thus deeming him the fastest mil runner in the state.

The 4 x 100 M Relay team consisting of Christopher Shiley, Jamal Palmer, Keylan Dennis and Keanon Dennis is less than a second off the best time in the state. They set a time of 40.70 at the Ben Brown Invitational. The same goes for the 4 x 400 M Relay with a squad comprised ofphil Griggs, Antonio Mitchell, Key. Dennis and Kea. Dennis. They earned a time of 3:17.51 at the RCC Invitational.

Sophomore Alec Jones has been a consistent presence in the throws realm by earning top state marks in the Discus at 153' 10" and the Hammer at 178' 6". Sophomore Marcos Gonzalez follows with a state-best mark in the Javelin at 186' 10". His mark is nearly 21 feet better than the second-place mark.
