Riverside Opens Season With Sixth-place Finish at Cal Baptist-hosted Lancer Invite Friday

RIVERSIDE -- Lifting the lid on its 2016 season as a "visiting" team on its home course, the Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers women's cross country team posted a sixth-place finish overall in the Lancer Invitational which was hosted by California Baptist University (CBU) on the Riverside City Cross Country Course Friday afternoon (Sept. 2).

The Riverside City Cross Country Course is located adjacent to and behind the Riverside City Fire Department Station at 1077 Orange Street, north of downtown Riverside.

In addition to CBU, Azusa Pacific University (APU), Concordia University-Irvine (CUI), Fresno Pacific University (FPU), Cal State University San Bernardino (CSUSB), and Cerritos College also participated in the 4.0-kilometer race which began at 5 p.m.

In the team standings, host CBU finished first (35 points), followed by APU (55), FPU (67), CSUSB (68), CUI (136), RCC (170), and Cerritos (205). CBU junior Leand de Bruyn won the race with a time of 14:19.

RCC frosh Sarah Hollis (Hemet / Hemet HS '16) led the Tigers with a 16th-place finish (15:43), followed by sophomore Natalie Vaughn (Corona / Santiago HS '15), who was 38th overall (16:34), frosh Robin Valencia (Ontario Christian HS), who was 40th overall (16:36), frosh Carissa Gomez (Citrus Valley HS), who was 42nd overall (16:44),frosh Esther Shader (San Jacinto / San Jacinto HS '16), who was 47th overall (16:46), and frosh Ariel Yepez (John W. North HS), who was 59th overall (17:08).
