Women’s Water Polo Goes 3-1 in Golden West Tournament

The Riverside City College women's water polo team participated in its third tournament on the season as they faced off against four two-year competitors at the Golden West College Tournament. They Tigers came out with three victories and pushed their overall record to two games above .500.

The Tigers scored in double-digits for the 11th consecutive game starting with a 19-3 victory over East Los Angeles. They continued on to beat Rio Hondo, 16-0, and LA Valley, 16-4, but fell to Orange Empire Conference (OEC) foe Orange Coast, 13-7.

It was offense by committee throughout the tournament as at least 10 players scored in the victories over Rio Hondo and East LA. Additionally, at least five players scored two or more goals in the day one wins.

Day two was a more condensed showing with five players scoring in double digits against LA Valley. OCC proved to be difficult on the offensive end, but the margin of defeat was decreased by two scores since their last meeting.

Leading the way is freshman tandem Lauren Nelson and Taylor Mason. Mason netted a tournament-high 12 goals highlighted by four goals over LA Valley. Mason followed with 11 scores and had a tournament-high four scores against LA Valley as well.

Nelson added six assists, while Mason had one assist in each game.

Freshman Lindsey Habegger hummed home six goals in the tournament highlighted by a three-goal outburst against LA Valley. Freshman Lauren Loffelmacher followed with five goals.

Freshman goalkeepers Gabriella Fisher and McKenna Ortiz shared time in the cage with Fisher earning two of the three wins and 23 saves. Ortiz pocketed a win and recorded 19 saves.

Riverside (8-6, 1-1 OEC) will continue conference action on the road this Wednesday, September 29 as they will face off against Orange Coast College for the third time this season.
