Women’s Water Polo Places Second at SoCals, Qualifies for State Championship

The Riverside City College women's water polo team was on the outside looking in on a state championship appearance last season. The goal this year was to not only return to the dance, but take home another state championship. The Tigers inched their way closer to their goal on Saturday as they defeated Santa Barbara, 12-7, in the semifinal game of the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern Regional Championships to qualify for the state championships.
Riverside completed the tournament by falling to the Fullerton College Hornets, 8-5, in the championship ballad. Nevertheless, the Tigers have qualified for their 14th state championship in the last 17 years. It is Head Coach Doug Finfrock's sixth time leading his team to the championships in his seven-year career at the helm.
In the victory against Santa Barbara, freshman Kadee Torres-Guerrero paved the way with four goals. She experienced a strong regional tournament by netting seven total goals.
Freshman Nicole Tormey was a defensive monster as she pocketed seven steals accompanied by a netter and an assist. Freshman Maria Roldan had a well-rounded contest with two goals, three steals and an assist.
Sophomore goalkeeper Madison Button earned the victory with seven saves. She recorded 10 saves in the loss to Fullerton.
