Women's Water Polo Snags Two Wins in Riverside Tournament

The Riverside City College women's water polo squad kicked off play in the 2019 Riverside Tournament on Saturday by hosting San Joaquin Delta and Cerritos. The Tigers cruised to a set of wins highlighted by a strong margin in both victories.

Riverside began the day with a commanding victory over San Joaquin Delta by the final score of 12-2. The Tigers exploded for six goals to set the tone.

Six different Tigers scored in the opening eight minutes with freshman Isabelle Ritter kicking it off with a netter just over two minutes in. Freshman Sophie Esdall capped the scoring streak with a buzzer-beating goal with three second remaining to grab a 6-0 advantage.

Delta jumped on the board in the second, but scores from freshman tandem Nicole Tormey and Maria Roldan maintained the sizable difference. Riverside and Delta traded scores in the third, but a fourth-quarter that saw the Tigers score three goals to and hold SJD off the board sealed a 12-2 win.

Roldan paced the Tigers in scoring with three goals and two assists, while Ritter found he back of the net once and assisted on two goals. Sophomore Michelle Hiller dished out two assists.

Sophomore Madison Button recorded eight saves and picked up her sixth win in three quarters of action.

Believe it or not, game two was even more dominant as the Tigers defeated Cerritos 16-4. RCC scored seven goals in the second period to highlight the melee. Freshman Dori Phillips scored twice in the span.

Nine players scored at least one goal with six players scoring two or more goals. Roldan lead the team with three goals, one assist and a steal. She has now scored at least one goal and one assist in every game she has participated.

Freshman Savannah Cypert found the net a pair of times to go along with two steals and an assist.

Riverside (7-1, 1-0 OEC) will face off against Santa Barbara and LA Valley on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 3:20 pm, respectively.
