Women's Water Polo Snags Early Lead Over Fullerton, Doesn’t Let Up in Conference Opener

Orange Empire Conference (OEC) play began on Wednesday afternoon as the Riverside City College women's water polo team hosted the 2018 State Runner Up Fullerton College Hornets. The Tigers were unfazed by the Hornet's past successes and jumped out to an early lead with ease. They eventually set sail to a 9-6 win.

Minimal chances surfaced for either team in the low-scoring affair. It was RCC who capitalized in crucial situations.

Riverside jumped on the board first with the opening four goals. Sophomore Hannah Peercy got the ball rolling with a netter, backed by two goals from freshman Maria Roldan. Freshman Kadee Torres-Guerrero polished off the four-goal run with a score leading to a 4-1 lead after the opening eight minutes.

After a dull second period where a lone score went to Fullerton, the Tigers responded with three goals in the third period. Torres-Guerrero sparked the offense with her second netter of the game, backed by two goals from freshman Jesenia Wilson. Wilson and Peercey added a score each in the fourth quarter leading to the victory.

Freshman Nicole Tormey was a menace on the defensive end with six steals and three drawn ejections, while freshman Savannah Cypert was responsible for two steals.

Sophomore Madison Button earned the victory after going the distance in the cage. She racked up four saves leading to her fifth win.
