Women’s Water Polo Commands the North at 2019 River Rage Tournament

In recent years, the North has produced some quality competition in the field of women's water polo. Despite that fact, the South continues to run the show as the North has produced a lone a state championship. The Tigers looked to continue that trend of running the state as they took on a pair of Northern teams to begin their 2019 campaign.

Riverside traveled to Sacramento, CA to compete in the 2019 River Rage and faced off against host squad American River and Sacramento City College, respectively. RCC had no issues whatsoever by defeating ARC, 19-2, followed by a dominant victory over Sac City, 20-2.

GAME ONE

There was no standout threat in the water because nearly every player that hopped in the pool was finding the back of the net with ease. The Tigers saw a dozen players score at least one goal with half a dozen of them recording two goals.

Sophomore Hannah Peercey, who was a staple in the 2018 campaign, picked up right where she left off by netting two goals and dishing out three assists. Her assist mark acted as a game high. Freshman Savannah Cypert netted two scores and dished out and assist. Furthermore, she was a menace on the defensive end with five steals.

Freshman Katelynn Bloom was equally as effective with two goals and one assist, backed by a three-steal effort on the other end of the pool. Freshman Jesenia Wilson established herself as an early season threat with two goals and three steals.

Sophomore Madison Button, who saw minimal time in the cage last year, was granted the start and earned her first win of the season. She racked up five saves and two assists in the win.

GAME TWO

It was a mirror image of the win over ARC in game two against Sac City as 13 players scored and a pair of Tigers scored three goals.

Freshman tandem Nicole Tormey and Jazzelle Figueroa scored three goals each to pace their squad. Freshman Kadee Torres-Guerrero pocketed two steals, fired home a pair of goals and drew one ejection, while freshman Jayden Sanford hummed home two goals. She recorded two assists as well.

Sophomore Kameryn Pfeiffer was effective with a goal, an assist and three steals. Bloom remained hot in the attack with two goals.

Button picked up her second win of the day with five saves while adding an assist. Freshman Natalie Rees chipped in with five saves and two assists.

Riverside (2-0) will continue action in the River Rage Tournament by playing the ARC Alumni team backed by a contest against San Joaquin Delta.
