Women’s Water Polo Defeats Citrus, Falls to Delta in Double Overtime Thriller

The Riverside City College women's water polo squad put its undefeated record to the test once again for their second and third game of this week by facing off against Citrus College and San Joaquin Delta, respectfully. After the Tigers handled Citrus by the final score of 9-4, they followed by dropping their first game of the season by one score to San Joaquin Delta, 8-7, in double overtime.
Game One vs. Citrus
It was a slow start to the contest with only one goal being scored in the first quarter. Freshman center Kate Fox (Murrieta, CA) was responsible for the lone score to provide the Tigers with an early edge.
Fox continued to cart a hot hand into the second quarter by closing out the frame with a pair of netters. Sophomore attacker Dafne Garcia (Mexico City, NM) added a goal as well to hand the Tigers a 4-1 lead entering halftime.
Riverside continued to possess offensive prowess in the third quarter with sophomore attacker Josceline Godinez (Menifee, CA) joining in on the action with two goals. Garcia added another as well. Godinez went on to score another goal in the fourth quarter followed by a netter from freshman attacker Nikkol Webber (Riverside, CA) leading to a 9-4 victory.
Freshman goalkeeper Hannah McCarley (Riverside, CA) played the all four quarters in goal and racked up seven saves while earning her ninth win of the season.
Game Two vs. San Joaquin Delta
It took six quarters for San Joaquin Delta to hand the Tigers their first loss of the season. Freshman attacker Katy Peterson (Menifee, CA) and Garcia each provided a pair of goals.
McCarley recorded a game-high 15 saves, bringing her to third in the OEC in total saves with 68. Her 68 saves equal a save percentage of 70.8 which is tops in the conference. She boasts the best record amongst goalkeepers in the OEC as well with a 9-1 record.
Garcia, a defensive monster, has recorded a total of 33 steals on the season which earns her tops in the conference and second in the state.
The Tigers (9-1, 2-0 OEC) return to action in the on Friday, September 29th and play in the Cuesta Tournament and look for revenge against San Joaquin Delta in their first matchup of the day.
